RankOps AI Visibility Rubric · Category 1 of 8
Independent Authority: Up to 20 of 100 Points
Independent authority measures how many sites you do not own or control mention your business. Your website says what you claim about yourself. Independent sites show AI whether anyone else agrees, which is why this is the largest category in the rubric.
Why it matters to AI
When someone asks an AI assistant to recommend a business, the assistant has to decide which businesses are real, which fit the question, and which it can describe with confidence.
Search engines have long treated mentions on other sites as evidence that a business exists and does what it says. AI assistants that search the live web, such as Google Gemini with Google Search, read many of the same pages. When several unconnected sources describe you the same way, that is easier for an assistant to repeat than a claim only your own site makes.
Independent mentions also give AI something specific to work with. A customer review that names the job and the town, or a trade association's member page, is a short, concrete fact.
None of this guarantees an AI will recommend you. This category measures whether the outside evidence exists for AI to find.
How the AI Visibility Map scores it
The free AI Visibility Map asks Google Gemini, with live Google Search, to find sites that mention your business. It then checks each one: does the site exist, is the page about you, and is it independent of you. Only sites that pass are counted. It is an estimate from what was found on the day, not a census of the web. If the search itself fails, your report says Not checked this time and this category scores 0, so request a fresh map to run it again.
| Signal | What the map found | Points |

Independent mentions (up to 18 points)
This is the count of separate sites that talk about your business and are not run by you. Points rise in steps at 1, 2, 4 and 7 sites, and your first independent site alone is worth 5 points.
What earns points: a customer review on a review site, a member listing from a trade or local association, a partner or supplier page that lists you, a local article, or a blog that discusses your work. The page must tie the mention to you: it shows your website address, the phone number on your homepage or the street address in your structured data, or your name plus two other details, such as your service, your town, your founder or a link to one of your profiles. A page that only repeats your name, or a page that no longer exists, is dropped before counting.
Review sites (2 extra points)
If at least one of your counted independent sites is a review platform, such as Yelp, the BBB, Angi, Houzz, Thumbtack, Nextdoor, Trustpilot or Tripadvisor, you earn 2 more points. Customers write them, not you. The bonus is paid once: two review sites still add 2 points, and the category never goes above 20.
What does not count as independent
Some sites are left out before counting, because they are usually your own: your website, any whole site listed in your structured data, social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube, Google, and pages on site builders such as Wix, WordPress.com or Blogspot. Three more kinds are found but set aside. Connected sites look like yours: their homepage shows your phone number or links to your own profiles, or their domain is named like your business. Self-published pages say your business or its owner wrote, posted or manages them, for example in an author or "managed by" line. Unchecked sites are ones the map could not read, for example because the page blocks automated visitors or shows almost no text without JavaScript. Your report names the first few under Not counted as independent, so you can see exactly what was set aside.
They still matter elsewhere. Profiles linked from your site count toward node breadth and coverage, and listings with your correct phone help entity identity consistency.
How to improve it
This is the slowest category to move, because the mentions have to come from other people. Expect months of steady work, not a quick fix.
- Ask every happy customer for a review on one or two review sites that matter in your trade, such as Yelp, Angi or Houzz. Reviews on your Google Business Profile or Facebook page still help customers, but the map treats those as your own profiles, so they do not count here. Put a direct link in your follow-up email or invoice. Never pay for reviews or write them yourself.
- Join trade associations, licensing bodies or your local chamber of commerce if they publish a member directory with your name and website.
- Ask suppliers, manufacturers and partners whether they list the businesses they work with, and send them your exact name, phone and website.
- Use the same business name, phone and website everywhere, so search and AI can tell each mention is about you.
- Request a fresh free AI Visibility Map after a few months to see whether the count has moved.
Where RankOps fits: the AI Entity Fix ($1,225) covers the agreed priority fixes across your website, structured data, Google Business Profile and selected directories. Those listings are mostly self-published, so they help other categories more than this one. The AI HQ Build ($4,997) includes the website itself, entity signals and 5 to 10 citation pages, each answering a question customers ask AI, which give others something specific to point to. Neither one creates independent mentions for you or guarantees what AI will say.
On the example map
The example map on the RankOps homepage is a real report emailed on Oct 10, 2026 for buy-sell.land, a business owned by RankOps founder Tyler Moncrieff. Its independent authority rectangle reads No independent mentions, shown as a red dashed gap: the map found 0 independent sites (rankops.net was found too, but it is connected to the business, so it does not count), so it earned 0 of 20 points here. Gemini still named the business in all 3 answers, which shows the two categories measure different things. No other category can lose that many points, which makes it the biggest single gap on that map.
Common questions
Do my own social profiles count as independent mentions?
No. Social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and Google, are left out before counting, so your own profiles there never appear in this category. Sites connected to you, and pages that say you wrote or manage them, are set aside too. Your report lists those, and any site it could not check, under Not counted as independent. Profiles linked from your website can still earn points in the node breadth category.
Why did my report find fewer mentions than I know exist?
The map asks Google Gemini, with live Google Search, to find independent sites that mention your business, then checks each one. It counts a site only when Gemini's answer names it and the page can be read and tied to you, so look under Not counted as independent in your report for sites that were found but set aside. It is an estimate of what an AI with search could surface that day, not a full count of the web. A mention that is hard for AI to find is also less likely to shape how AI describes you, so the gap is still worth knowing.
How long does it take to raise this score?
Usually months, not days. Independent mentions come from real customers, partners and organizations, and each one has to be published and then found by search. Steady habits, like asking happy customers for reviews and joining associations that list their members, add up over time. No one can promise a set number of mentions by a set date.
